New Zealand South Island Road Trip: The Complete 10-14 Day Itinerary
New Zealand's South Island isn't just a destination, it's the kind of place that redefines what natural beauty means. Turquoise lakes framed by snow-capped peaks. Glaciers spilling into rainforests. Fjords carved so deep they look painted. Roads that wind through landscapes you didn't know existed outside of fantasy films.
We spent two years living and traveling across New Zealand's South Island, and here's what we learned: this place demands time, respect, and proper planning. Rush it, and you'll spend your entire trip stressed behind the wheel. Plan it right, and you'll have the journey of a lifetime.
How Much Time Do You Really Need?
Let's start with the most important planning decision: duration. Our recommendation for New Zealand is 2-3 weeks minimum for the South Island only. If you want to add the North Island, plan another 2+ weeks. For both islands done properly, you're looking at 4-5 weeks total.
This itinerary covers 10-14 days on the South Island, which gives you a solid introduction to the highlights. But understand this is the express version. If you have more time, use it. New Zealand rewards slow travel.
A Critical Note on Driving Times
Don't trust Google Maps for drive times in New Zealand. The algorithm doesn't account for narrow mountain roads, one-lane bridges, mountain passes, or the fact that you'll want to stop every 20 minutes for photos. Add 25-50% to any Google Maps estimate. A route that shows 3 hours will realistically take 4-5 hours, and that's without extended photo stops or detours to viewpoints.
The Route: Queenstown to Christchurch
This itinerary starts in Queenstown (fly in) and ends in Christchurch (fly out). Total distance is approximately 1,000km over 10-14 days. The route flows naturally north from the adventure capital through the West Coast's wilderness, up to stunning lakeside towns, and finishes in Christchurch. You'll experience dramatic landscape changes: alpine peaks, glaciers, turquoise lakes, and coastal beauty.
DAYS 1-3: QUEENSTOWN
Queenstown sits on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by the Remarkables mountain range. It's New Zealand's adventure capital, but it's also a sophisticated mountain resort town with excellent restaurants, wine bars, and shopping.
Day 1 should be arrival and acclimatization. Pick up your rental car (book well in advance), take the Skyline Gondola for sunset views over the lake and mountains, and have dinner on the waterfront. Rata, Botswino, or Fergburger if you want the famous burgers.
Day 2 is for the Milford Sound day trip. This is non-negotiable. Milford Sound is one of the most spectacular fjords on Earth. The drive from Queenstown is advertised as 4 hours each way, but realistically plan for 5-6 hours each way with stops. You'll drive through stunning landscapes like Mirror Lakes, The Chasm, and Homer Tunnel, and you'll want to stop at all of them.
Book a cruise on the sound itself. We recommend the smaller boat operators for a more intimate experience. Book your Milford Sound cruise through Viator here: https://www.viator.com/tours/Fiordland-and-Milford-Sound/Milford-Sound-Sightseeing-Cruise/d756-21377P1 (over 2,800 5-star reviews and winner of Viator Experience Award 2024). You'll see waterfalls plunging hundreds of meters, fur seals, and if you're lucky, dolphins.
Alternative option: Stay overnight in Te Anau (the gateway to Milford) to break up the driving. This also lets you experience the Te Anau Glowworm Caves.
Day 3 is for local Queenstown adventures. Try the Shotover Jet boat ride (thrilling 360-degree spins through narrow canyons), wine tasting in Gibbston Valley, bungy jumping if that's your thing (Queenstown invented commercial bungy), or simply explore Arrowtown, a charming historic gold mining town 20 minutes away. Pre-book your Shotover Jet through Viator here: https://www.viator.com/tours/Queenstown/Shotover-River-Extreme-Jet-Boat-Ride-from-Queenstown/d407-5626SHOTOVER (over 1,600 5-star reviews).

Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa delivers 5-star French luxury with lake views, excellent spa, and sophisticated dining. A bit removed from the town center (short drive or walk), which means quieter surroundings. Check availability: https://www.booking.com & http://agoda.com
DAYS 4-5: WANAKA
The drive from Queenstown to Wanaka is 70km (1.5 hours, but plan for 2+ with stops at Cardrona). Wanaka offers everything Queenstown does—stunning alpine lake, mountain activities, excellent food—but with half the crowds and a more laid-back vibe. The drive takes you over the Crown Range (New Zealand's highest sealed road) with absolutely jaw-dropping views.
In Wanaka, you can walk to Roys Peak for sunrise (challenging 4-6 hour return hike, but the Instagram-famous viewpoint is worth it), visit the famous Wanaka Tree (a lone tree growing in the lake), explore Mount Aspiring National Park, go skydiving over the lake (Wanaka has some of NZ's best skydiving), or check out Puzzling World for something quirky.
Where to Stay in Wanaka:
Edgewater Hotel is a 4-star lakefront resort right on the lake with private beach access. Comfortable rooms, many with lake views, and an excellent on-site restaurant. The location makes it easy to walk into town along the lakefront. Check availability: https://www.booking.com & http://www.agoda.com
Matakauri Lodge (just outside Queenstown, but worth mentioning) is 5-star ultra-luxury. If you're looking for New Zealand's finest luxury accommodation, Matakauri delivers. All-inclusive luxury with stunning architecture, world-class dining, and views that will haunt you forever. Located between Queenstown and Glenorchy. Check availability: https://www.booking.com & http://www.agoda.com
DAYS 6-7: WEST COAST GLACIERS
The drive from Wanaka to Franz Josef or Fox Glacier is 285km. Google says 3.5 hours but reality is 5+ hours. This is where the landscape completely transforms. You'll drive through Haast Pass, crossing from the dry alpine interior to the lush, wild West Coast. The drive itself is stunning with waterfalls, blue pools, and dense rainforest, but it's long and winding. Do not rush this drive.
Stop at the Blue Pools Track on the drive from Wanaka. It's a short 30-minute return walk to impossibly turquoise pools and absolutely worth the stop.
At Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, you can take a helicopter tour onto the glacier (expensive but extraordinary), do a glacier hike with a guide (boots, crampons, ice axes provided), or walk to the glacier viewpoints (free, but doesn't get you on the ice).
Want to walk on the glacier? Book a Franz Josef Heli-Hike through Viator here: https://www.viator.com/tours/Franz-Josef-and-Fox-Glacier/Heli-Hike-Franz-Josef-Glacier-Walk/d757-2524HDICE (775 reviews) or a Fox Glacier Heli-Hike here: https://www.viator.com/tours/Franz-Josef-and-Fox-Glacier/Heli-Hike-Fox-Glacier/d757-42720P2 (763 reviews). These sell out quickly and are the only way to safely explore the ice caves and crevasses with crampons and expert guides.
Don't miss Lake Matheson near Fox Glacier. It's a famous mirror lake that reflects Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on calm mornings. Early morning visit essential.
Where to Stay: Franz Josef Area
Te Waonui Forest Retreat is a 4-star rainforest lodge set in native rainforest with modern rooms, indoor-outdoor hot pools, and a strong sustainability focus. The location is magical—rainforest surrounds you, and it's walking distance to Franz Josef village. Check availability: https://www.booking.com & http://www.agoda.com
Distinction Fox Glacier Te Weheka Boutique Hotel is a 4-star boutique hotel with mountain views and a good restaurant. Fox Glacier village is tiny, so having on-site dining is valuable. Check availability: https://www.booking.com & http://www.agoda.com
DAYS 8-9: LAKE TEKAPO
The drive from Franz Josef to Lake Tekapo is 410km. Google says 5.5 hours but reality is 7-8 hours with stops. This is your longest driving day, but it's worth it. Lake Tekapo sits in the Mackenzie Basin, one of the world's largest Dark Sky Reserves. The lake is an unreal shade of milky turquoise (from glacial flour), and the stargazing is world-class.
Important: Consider breaking this drive into two days by stopping in Hokitika (West Coast) for a night. This reduces stress and lets you explore the coast.
In Lake Tekapo, visit the Church of the Good Shepherd (iconic photo spot on the lake shore), go stargazing at Mount John Observatory (book well in advance), soak in Tekapo Springs hot pools with mountain views, and walk the Lake Tekapo Walkway at sunset.
Side trip option: If you have extra time, detour to Mount Cook Village (1 hour from Tekapo) for hikes in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The Hooker Valley Track is phenomenal.
Where to Stay in Lake Tekapo:
Peppers Bluewater Resort is a 4-star lakefront resort with apartment-style accommodations right on the lake with stunning views. Full kitchens, comfortable rooms, and walking distance to the village. The villas have private hot tubs—perfect after long driving days. Check availability: https://www.booking.com & http://www.agoda.com
The Godley Resort Hotel is a 4-star lakefront hotel with huge windows designed for stargazing from your room. Excellent restaurant and spa. The location on the lake is superb. Check availability: https://www.booking.com & http://www.agoda.com
DAYS 10-11: CHRISTCHURCH
The drive from Lake Tekapo to Christchurch is 225km. Google says 2.5 hours but plan for 3.5 hours. Christchurch is New Zealand's South Island's largest city, still rebuilding after the devastating 2011 earthquake but with a vibrant arts scene, excellent restaurants, and beautiful parks.
In Christchurch, visit the Christchurch Botanic Gardens (stunning), punt on the Avon River, visit the transitional Cardboard Cathedral, explore the Container Mall (Re:START), see New Regent Street for colorful Spanish Mission architecture, or take a day trip to Akaroa (French harbor town on Banks Peninsula, 1.5 hours away).
Where to Stay in Christchurch:
The George Hotel is 5-star boutique luxury and Christchurch's finest boutique hotel with elegant rooms, award-winning restaurant, and central location near the Botanic Gardens. Perfect for your final nights before flying home. Check availability: https://www.booking.com & http://www.agoda.com
Hotel Montreal is a 4-star historic boutique hotel in a beautifully restored heritage building with modern comforts. Great location, excellent service, and reasonable pricing for the quality. Check availability: https://www.booking.com & http://www.agoda.com
ESSENTIAL SOUTH ISLAND ROAD TRIP TIPS
Drive on the left if you're from right-side-driving countries. This takes adjustment. Roads are narrow and winding—even major highways can be two-lane mountain roads. Watch for one-lane bridges (they're everywhere, and right-of-way isn't always obvious). Expect livestock on rural roads. Sheep crossings are real. Stop at every scenic viewpoint. You'll regret skipping them. Fill up in towns because gas stations are sparse in remote areas.
Best time to visit: Summer (December-February) has the best weather and longest days but is most crowded and expensive. Shoulder season (March-April, September-November) is our top recommendation with great weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Winter (June-August) is skiing season, but some roads close (including Milford Road) and days are shorter.
New Zealand isn't cheap. Expect premium pricing for accommodations (especially in Queenstown), dining out (NZ$30-50 per person for casual dining), activities (everything costs money—walks and hikes are the free exceptions), and rental cars (book early for better rates).
Pack layers because weather changes constantly, a rain jacket (essential, especially on the West Coast), good walking shoes (even casual travelers will do short walks), sunscreen (UV is intense, even on cloudy days), and insect repellent (sandflies on the West Coast are vicious).
EXTENDING YOUR TRIP
Add 2-3 days for Dunedin and Otago Peninsula between Queenstown and the West Coast for Otago Peninsula wildlife (penguins, albatross), Dunedin's Scottish heritage architecture, Speight's Brewery tour, and Baldwin Street (world's steepest residential street).
Add 2-3 days for Marlborough Wine Region between Christchurch and heading north for world-class Sauvignon Blanc tasting, stunning wine country landscapes, and a gourmet food scene.
The North Island deserves 2+ additional weeks if you have time. Explore Rotorua's geothermal wonders, Bay of Islands sailing, Wellington's arts and food scene, Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and Hobbiton (if you're into Lord of the Rings). We recommend doing the South Island first—it's more dramatic and will be the visual highlight of your trip.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Should I book a campervan or rent a car and stay in hotels? Both work beautifully in New Zealand. Campervans offer flexibility and lower accommodation costs but require different planning (finding powered sites, dealing with waste). Hotels and lodges offer comfort and convenience. We can guide you to the right choice based on your travel style.
Is it safe to drink the water? Yes, New Zealand's tap water is safe everywhere. Exception: always treat stream or river water if hiking.
Do I need travel insurance? Absolutely. Medical care is expensive for visitors, and you'll be doing activities with risk (hiking, boat trips, potentially adventure sports). Don't skip this.
Can I do this itinerary in reverse (Christchurch to Queenstown)? Yes, the route works both directions. We prefer Queenstown-to-Christchurch because you end in a major city (easier for flights) and save the best scenery (Queenstown region) for when you're fresh.
What about the North Island? The North Island is incredible but different—more geothermal activity, Maori culture, beaches, and warmer weather. It deserves 2+ weeks if you're adding it to your trip.
