Gulf Islands Hotels
The Best Places to Stay:
Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan
The Gulf Islands are a different Thailand entirely. Where the Andaman coast has dramatic limestone cliffs and emerald water, the Gulf side has a warmer, greener energy--jungle interiors, powdery beaches, and three islands that each attract a completely different kind of traveler.
Koh Samui for the traveler who wants full luxury and all the amenities that come with it. Koh Phangan for those who want something more intimate, with the Full Moon Party as a bonus rather than the whole point. Koh Tao for divers, snorkelers, and anyone who wants a smaller island that hasn't completely given itself over to tourism yet.
Every property below is one I've personally stayed in or hand-picked for WanderlustPro clients. These are the ones that actually deliver.
Banyan Tree Samui (Lamai Bay) 88 all-pool villas cascading down a private hillside cove above Lamai Bay. Michelin Two Key hotel, TTG Asia Best Luxury Hotel Koh Samui 2024, and consistently one of the most romantic properties in Southeast Asia. Best for honeymooners and couples who want total seclusion, world-class wellness, and the kind of service that remembers your name before you've introduced yourself.
The W (Mae Nam Beach): All-villa property on Mae Nam Beach with private pools, beachfront access, and the kind of design energy that W does better than almost anyone. Ranked #1 hotel in Koh Samui on TripAdvisor. Best for couples and social travelers who want style, beach access, and a lively resort atmosphere. Worth noting the villas are a little dated in places--book a beach villa for the best experience.
Pearl of Samui Resort (Lamai Beach) 12 renovated private villas directly on Lamai Beach with a sea view pool and some of the warmest, most attentive hosting I've seen at this category. Best for couples who want a boutique beachfront experience without boutique prices -- this one consistently punches well above what you'd expect.
Anzhu Seamate Villa (Near Lamai) Only 17 villas, no televisions by design, and an infinity pool with views that make the absence feel like a feature rather than a complaint. Built around a natural living concept, the kind of place you book when you want to actually switch off. Best for couples and honeymooners who want genuine privacy and beautiful design without the full five-star price tag.

Koh Samui
Koh Tao
Koh Tao Heights Pool Villas (Sairee Bay): Two private infinity pool villas perched above Sairee Bay with panoramic views of the turquoise water and Koh Nang Yuan beyond. Total privacy, lush greenery, and the kind of setting that makes every other option feel like a compromise. Best for couples who want complete seclusion with one of the best views on the island. Worth noting: steep access road and stairs so not ideal if mobility is a concern.
Greenery Resort (Chalok Baan Kao) Simple, clean, friendly, and well located near Chalok Baan Kao Bay and a short distance from Shark Bay-- one of Koh Tao's best snorkeling spots. Scooter rental available on site which on Koh Tao is essential. Best for divers and snorkelers who want a no-fuss comfortable base close to the water without paying resort prices.
The Place Luxury Boutique Villas (Sairee Hills): Nine private pool villas set in jungle hillside above Sairee, each with a private infinity pool and sea views that stop you mid-sentence. The host Guy is exceptional -- think personal booklet of local recommendations, scooter rental arranged, and genuine attention to detail throughout. Best for couples and honeymooners who want the most beautiful and private villa experience on Koh Tao. A short walk down to the beach and restaurants.
Good Place (Chalok Baan Kao) One of the rare budget options on Koh Tao with a proper kitchenette -- a genuinely useful feature for longer stays. Clean, comfortable, excellent staff, and about a 10-minute walk to Chalok Baan Kao Bay. Best for solo travelers and budget-conscious couples who want their own space and a quiet location away from the Mae Haad and Sairee bustle.
Lucke Boutique Hotel (Mae Haad)--Adults Only: Small, stylish, adults-only beachfront property right in Mae Haad with private patio rooms, beach chairs, and Sairee Beach is only a 15-minute walk. Best for couples who want a clean, well-designed boutique experience without paying villa prices --this one is a genuine find at the mid-range category.
Koh Phangan
Morning Star Resort (Ban Tai): Beachfront bungalows with sea views, a pool, and consistently warm staff on a pretty stretch of Ban Tai beach. Located 50 meters from the Black Moon Party and 10 minutes from the Full Moon Party -- which is either perfect or worth knowing about depending on your plans. Best for travelers who want a genuine beach bungalow experience close to Koh Phangan's party scene but in a calmer setting when the parties aren't on.
Sunset Hill Boutique Resort (Haad Yao / Haad Chao Phao): Hillside resort on the quieter west coast of Koh Phangan with one of the most spectacular infinity pool sunset views in the Gulf of Thailand. Panoramic views take in Angthong National Marine Park, Koh Samui, and open ocean. Free shuttle to the nearby beaches. Best for couples and retreat-goers who want dramatic views, genuine quiet, and a base for exploring the island without being in the thick of the Full Moon Party chaos.
La Belle Vie Boutique Hotel (Ban Tai Beach): Only six rooms, each decorated with original artwork by renowned artist Anis Dargaa--this is one of the most thoughtfully designed small hotels I've come across anywhere in Thailand. French-style breakfast included and steps from the beach. Best for couples who want something genuinely intimate and rather than a standard resort experience. 15 minutes from Haad Rin and the Full Moon Party if you want it.
Sea Escapes Resort (Thongsala): Opened December 2024 with consistently strong reviews. Pool, restaurant, bar, garden setting, and a central Thongsala location that puts the whole island within reach. Best for travelers who want a fresh, well-priced base without the older resort feel that some of Koh Phangan's longer-established properties carry.
Ocean Vibes (Thongsala): Rated 5/5 on TripAdvisor with a beach setting, sunset bar, and a food and drink offering that guests mention repeatedly as a genuine highlight. The vibe here consistently gets described as paradise-level for the price. Best for travelers who want beach access, great food, and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere without spending luxury money.
Luxury
Thailand's most developed Gulf island and for good reason. Samui has the infrastructure, the international airport, the fine dining, and the full-service luxury resorts that the other Gulf islands simply can't match yet. It's the right call for travelers who want a polished, well-connected island experience with everything close at hand, and the hotel scene here has quietly become one of the strongest in Southeast Asia.
Mid-Range
Budget
Hansar Samui Resort (Bophut): Every single room has unobstructed ocean views and an oversized private balcony--that's not a claim, that's the design of the entire property. Steps from Fisherman's Village which is one of the nicest stretches of Samui for dining and evening walks. Best for couples who want luxury without the mega-resort feel and easy access to one of the island's best neighborhoods.
Skye Beach Hotel (Choeng Mon)--Kid Friendly: Only 14 individually designed pool villas on a quiet beachfront stretch near Choeng Mon, one of Samui's most peaceful beaches. The staff reviews here are some of the most consistently warm I've seen on the island. Best for families and couples who want privacy, a private pool, and a genuinely relaxed corner of Samui well away from the airport noise and Chaweng strip.
Marasca Samui (Chaweng): Opened 2024, Small Luxury Hotels of the World member, right in the heart of Chaweng with beach club access included for hotel guests. Clean, well-designed rooms, strong breakfast, and a lively atmosphere that suits the location. Worth noting: it sits under the airport flight path and opposite a bar that runs late--book a room away from the street side if noise is a concern.
Renaissance Koh Samui Resort & Spa (Lamai): Temple-style architecture, lush gardens, a 25-meter lap pool, and a food and beverage operation that punches well above what you'd expect from a Marriott property. The pool villas with private courtyards are the ones to book. Best for travelers who want reliable five-star standards with genuine character, this one gets repeat guests for a reason.

Code Hotel (Mae Nam)--Adults Only: Hillside adults-only property above Mae Nam with an infinity pool, sea views you can see from bed, and staff that consistently get called out by name in reviews for going above and beyond. Quieter end of the island, free shuttle to the beach, & scooter rental on site. Best for travelers who want peace, great service, and a genuinely beautiful setting away from the Chaweng chaos.
Casa Del Mar-Samui (North Chaweng): Boutique beachfront villas just far enough from central Chaweng to feel calm but close enough to walk to everything. The beachfront pool villas with private pools are the standout. Best for couples who want direct beach access and a relaxed atmosphere without paying the big resort prices.
Beluga Boutique Hotel (Lamai): Small, stylish, and right on Lamai Beach with a rooftop terrace, beachfront dining at THE TABLE, and the kind of intimate atmosphere that bigger resorts can't replicate. Best for couples who want a genuinely boutique beach experience on Samui's more laid-back southern shore.
Small, unhurried, and still genuinely special. Koh Tao built its reputation on world-class diving and snorkeling but it's become something more than that--a compact, beautiful island that rewards travelers who want to slow down without sacrificing the scenery. No big resort chains, no shopping malls, just jungle hills, and turquoise bays.
Luxury
The Fisherman's Villas (Shark Bay): Four private villas perched above Shark Bay, one of Koh Tao's best snorkeling spots, with private infinity plunge pools and panoramic ocean views. On-site dive school and speedboat trips make it a strong pick for divers. Best for couples and families who want seclusion, stunning views, and easy water access all in one place. Worth noting: remote location so a scooter is essential.
Mid-Range
Budget

Most people know Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party--and yes, it's there if you want it. But the island has grown into something far more interesting than its reputation suggests. The west coast is quiet, the interior is jungle-covered and largely untouched, and the boutique hotel scene has matured significantly in the last few years. Best for travelers who want a beautiful, versatile island with a little more edge and authenticity than Samui.

Anankhira Villas (Sairee Beach): Balinese-style chalets with private plunge pools set into the hillside above Sairee with views that guests describe as absolute paradise. Best for couples and honeymooners who want a genuinely beautiful and intimate hillside retreat within reach of Sairee's beach and restaurants. Worth noting: steep road up the hill so a scooter is a must.
Shiva Lodge (Chalok) A newer property built around the natural boulders of the hillside--think modern treehouse lodge with two-story design, outdoor reading nets in the trees, sea views, and the kind of attention to detail that makes it feel unlike anything else on the island. Best for design-conscious travelers who want something genuinely original rather than another beachfront bungalow. A steep hill to access but worth it.
The Plantation (Sairee): Set in a former coconut plantation 300 meters from Sairee Beach with uninterrupted sea views from every room and villa. The two and three-bedroom pool villas are the standout--private pool, fully equipped kitchen, and the best sunset views on the island. Best for couples, families, and longer stays who want space, and a proper kitchen, without being far from Sairee's restaurants and bars. Free pier pickup on arrival included.
Mae Ya Resort (South Koh Tao): Ten private pool villas in a quiet, remote corner of the island well away from the Sairee strip--each with stunning panoramic ocean views, private pool, and the kind of calm that's increasingly hard to find on a dive island. Best for couples who want genuine seclusion and a beautiful setting and don't need to be close to the action. Scooter rental available on site and highly recommended given the location.
Kupu Kupu Phangan Beach Villas (West Coast): 34 Balinese-style beachfront villas with private plunge pools on a beautiful west-facing stretch of beach built for sunsets. The l'Occitane spa is a genuine draw and the family villas get consistently rave reviews. Best for couples and families who want a relaxed, well-run beachfront property away from the Full Moon Party crowd.
Anantara Rasananda Villas (Thong Nai Pan): Every villa has a private pool, and a sundeck, the smallest room starting at 80sqm. The spa treatment rooms embedded in natural limestone are genuinely stunning, and the wellness program goes well beyond your standard hotel offering. Ranked #1 in Koh Phangan by multiple sources and earns it. Best for couples who want proper five-star luxury on an island not known for it.
Varivana Resort (Wok Tum): Modern tropical design with a rooftop bar, panoramic views, and an infinity pool that guests describe as the standout feature. Close to Secret Beach and Zen Beach with scooter rental on site. Best for travelers who want a stylish mid-range base with easy access to the quieter west coast spots without paying full luxury prices.
Explorar--Adults Only 16+ (Haad Rin Nai): Beachfront adults-only resort right on Haad Rin Nai with direct golden sand access, sunset views over the Gulf, and a wood-fired Mediterranean and Thai restaurant that gets strong reviews. Calm enough to genuinely relax, close enough to Haad Rin to walk to the Full Moon Party if you want it. Best for couples who want the best of both worlds without committing entirely to either.
Panviman Resort (Thong Nai Pan): Carved into a jungle cliffside between two of Koh Phangan's most beautiful bays -- the setting alone justifies the booking. Buggy service runs constantly for guests who don't fancy the hillside walks. Best for travelers who want genuine seclusion, dramatic views, and a property that feels nothing like a chain hotel. Some rooms are showing their age so book a pool villa for the best experience.
Ozone Cave (Thong Nai Pan Noi): Five-star boutique property three minutes walk from Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach with a saltwater pool, free bikes, and views that consistently get called out as the highlight. One of the quietest and most beautiful corners of Koh Phangan. Best for couples who want a genuinely special, design-led stay well away from the Full Moon Party chaos.
