Bangkok, But Done Right
A 48-Hour Plan I’d Actually Send a Friend
I’m not going to give you a packed, exhausting Bangkok itinerary. You don’t need 14 temples, 3 rooftops, and a checklist that makes you feel behind all day. This is what I’d send a friend who lands in Bangkok and says: "I want to experience it…but I don’t want to hate my life doing it." It’s slower, a little more intentional, and built around places that actually feel good to be in. Not just the places you’ve seen on TikTok.
DAY 1—Arrive, Reset, Ease Into It
Start in Ari (Trust me on this). Most people land in Bangkok and immediately throw themselves into Sukhumvit or Old Town chaos.
Don’t. Go to Ari first. It’s one of the few neighborhoods that feels calm, local, and livable.
Nana Coffee Roasters (Ari)
This is where you sit down, order something simple, and finally exhale. It’s clean, minimal, and just far enough removed from the madness that you can gather yourself before jumping into the city.
Walk the side streets after. You’ll see small cafes, low-rise buildings, and a version of Bangkok most people completely miss.
Midday: Do Less
Go back to your hotel. Shower. Reset.
This is the difference between a good trip and a burnt-out one.
Bangkok heat + travel fatigue will sneak up on you fast. Protect your energy here.
Sunset: Pick Your Rooftop Wisely
Belga Rooftop Bar (Sofitel Sukhumvit)
This is the rooftop I send people who say: “I want a view, but I don’t want chaos.”
It’s elevated without trying too hard. You can actually sit, talk, and enjoy it without fighting for space or dealing with crowds taking photos every two seconds.
Cul de Sac – Thonglor Rooftop Bar
If you want something a bit more low-key but still in a great area, this is a really solid option.
It’s not overhyped, which is exactly why it works. The vibe is relaxed, a little more local, and you’re right in Thonglor, so if you want to keep the night going, you’re already in one of the best areas to do it.
It feels more like somewhere you hang out, not just somewhere you stop for a drink and leave.
Late Night: Keep It Low-Key
Modern Day Culture (Record Bar, Thonglor)
End the night here. It’s part listening bar, part creative space. Think dim lighting, good music, and a crowd that feels more local than tourist-heavy. This is where you go when you want something a little more intentional than a loud bar.
Perfect for:
winding down
a more interesting night out
or just sitting with a drink and letting the day settle
DAY 2—Explore Smarter, Not Harder
Morning: Temples (but don’t overdo it)
Pick 1–2 max and go early, before the heat and crowds build. You don’t need to temple-hop all day to appreciate them, in fact, doing that usually makes people enjoy them less.
Midday Reset: (Stay Near Old Town)
Floral Café at Napasorn
After temples, this is exactly the kind of place you’ll want. It’s tucked inside a flower market space, filled with greenery, soft light, and a completely different energy from the streets outside. It feels calm, slightly hidden, and is perfectly placed so you’re not running all over the city.
Take your time here, you’ll want the break.
Afternoon: Something Different
Warehouse 30
A converted creative space that feels a bit raw, a bit industrial, and very different from the polished parts of Bangkok.
There are galleries, small shops, and open spaces that make it worth wandering slowly. It’s not a “must-see” in a tourist sense, which is exactly why it’s good.
Sunset: A Night Market That Still Feel Fun
Train Night Market (Rod Fai)
There are a lot of markets in Bangkok that feel like copy-paste tourist traps. This one still gets it right. Go hungry, wander, and don’t overthink it.
Good mix of:
food
vintage stalls
random finds
actual energy without being overwhelming
Late Night: Hidden Spot
Abandoned Mansion
This is one of those places that feels like it shouldn’t be there. This live jazz "underground speakeasy" makes incredible cocktails taking you back to the prohibition days. This is the part of Bangkok most people never experience. (pro tip-make a reservation)
Final Thought
Bangkok isn’t about doing more. It’s about choosing better: better timing, better areas, better pacing. That’s what turns it from overwhelming into something you actually enjoy.
